I often recommend that quilters start hand piecing with Quilted Diamonds 2 (the second book) because it is so easy to learn from the demonstrations on the DVD.  Each book is $29.95 but QD2 includes a two-hour hand piecing lesson on DVD, for the same price.  You can compare the contents of the two books and see sample pages of each using the links here.

If you have Electric Quilt software (EQ4, EQ5 or EQ6), you may want to add the optional CDs of patterns, at $10.00 each, so you can print the QD patterns on freezer paper, instead of tracing.
