Encore Presentation of the Eighth Live Inklingo Video

Replay of Live Inklingo Video 08

HOW TO USE FREEZER PAPER TEMPLATES
The eighth LIVE Inklingo video is intended to help all quilters—whether or not they use Inklingo to print on fabric.

Please scroll down to the last image (with the play button) to watch the replay.

This video is full of great tips for using freezer paper.

You might wonder why I teach a method that doesn’t used Inklingo but it makes total sense because Inklingo is all about making quilting more accessible.

Sometimes you cannot print on fabric. On the other hand . . . . .

Anything you can draw or print in freezer paper, you can cut apart and sew together again.

Dear Jane quilt by Linda Franz 1999

I made My Dear Jane™ quilt by hand with freezer paper templates. This quilt won a first place ribbon at the AQS Show in Paducah in 1999.

The New Hexagon - Katja Marek

In the video, I used The New Hexagon Book by Katja Marek as an example because I frequently hear from quilters who are not getting the results they want with English Paper Piecing and they want to know what Inklingo shape collections they need to make the designs. (Index of Shapes)

Dancing with the Stars Quilt, Millefiori Quilts 2

There is also a demonstration showing how to make Dancing with the Stars in Millefiori Quilts 2 by Willyne Hammerstein with Inklingo by adapting a printed shape because one of the shapes is not inklingo-able yet.

I also explained how to use freezer paper templates to make any of the quilts in The Patchworks of Lucy Boston by Diana Boston or Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses (POTC), and even clothing!

How to use freezer paper templates

HIGHLIGHTS OF DEMONSTRATIONS

  • tips for tracing a design from a book
  • using spacer strips to position the templates on fabric (above)
  • rotary cutting with a ruler marked with the seam allowance
  • adjusting for wider or narrower seam allowances
  • markers to use on dark fabric
  • using freezer paper templates even when you don’t need to mark the sewing lines
  • using freezer paper templates whether you sew by hand OR by machine
  • how to keep the fabric shapes organized while you sew
  • fussy cutting a border print
  • making thicker freezer paper templates
  • using temporary Glue Dots to salvage expensive paper pieces, or when it is not practical to use a hot dry iron to iron FP templates to fabric
  • how to adapt a printed shape when the actual shape is not available

Acrylic or freezer paper?

WHY FREEZER PAPER TEMPLATES ARE BETTER THAN ACRYLIC
The demonstrations show how it is easier to rotary cut and mark sewing lines with freezer paper—not acrylic.

Acrylic templates don’t do what freezer paper templates can do, so they are not the best option.

IMPORTANT LINKS

All of the information in this video is also covered in the Quilted Diamonds 2 DVD lesson. I did not do any sewing in Live Video 08 but the QD2 DVD lesson includes everything about using freezer paper templates AND all of my best tips for hand piecing.

I’M ALREADY PLANNING ANOTHER LIVE VIDEO
The best way to know what is new is to subscribe to the blog by email.

It is also a good idea to check the Inklingo Facebook Page frequently because Facebook does not show you anything from Inklingo unless I pay them, even when you have liked the page. If you don’t visit, you will miss whatever is happening.

Introduction to Inklingo

Please share the Inklingo videos with your friends. This one is only 8 minutes.

There is also  summary of the other LIVE videos on the website. (Click on the Video tab.)

NEW Pizzicato and NEW Live Video

Ietsie Pietsie Pizzicato by Willyne Hammerstein

You certainly know how to keep me busy. I’ve been listening.

  1. New Shapes! Ietsie Pietsie Pizzicato, which I am calling Pizzicato for short.
  2. New Live Video! Friday Night 7 pm Eastern

Ietsie Pietsie Pizzicato by Willyne Hammerstein

PIZZICATO
The Ietsie Pietsie Pizzicata shape collection is ready now! It is one of Willyne Hammerstein’s brilliant designs in Millefiori Quilts 3.

As usual, there is a LOW intro price for one week only.

Russ reads every word of every shape collection out loud to help me proofread. He laughed every time he read “Ietsie Pietsie Pizzicato.” I have never heard these words before but I can confidently say that he did not pronounce any part of it correctly.

Ietsie Pietsie is a bit like Itsy Bitsy.

Pizzicato is a playing technique that involves plucking the strings of string instrument, like a violin or guitar.

I will probably never pronounce any of this correctly. I learned how to read with phonics before I was old enough to go to kindergarten. I pronounce words with a Canadian accent and the way they are spelled. Here is a pronunciation link for the purists.

Print Hexagons on Fabric

My pronunciation may be suspect but the shapes to print on fabric are absolutely perfect. You will love the results when you start with precise shapes!

Ietsie Pietsie Pizzicato templates

Ietsie Pietsie Pizzicato includes new sizes of hexagons, diamonds, triangles, and stars. It is a great addition to your collection of collections!

LIVE VIDEO 08
Your reaction to the live videos energizes me. I’ve been getting ready for another one. I hope you will join the fun.

This time, I will share tips for finding what shapes are available, what to do when you are just missing one or two shapes, and how to make a request. This sounds straightforward but I have a LOT to show you!

The list of requests seems to get longer every day. When I took the shape collection for Ietsie Pietsie Pizzicato off the list, I added three more.

The original plan was to announce Pizzicato in the live video but I have prepared so many  good demos that I could be talking all night, so you are hearing about it now.

Inklingo Live Video

HOW TO WATCH LIVE
Go to the Inklingo Facebook Page.

When: Friday, April 6, 7 pm Eastern Time. World Time Buddy tells you what time that is in your time zone.

There is no sound until you hover over the video and click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner. The video should play immediately but if it doesn’t, please refresh the page.

Please tell your friends too because Google (gmail) and Yahoo have changed the email rules to make it harder for blog emails to be delivered.

Ietsie Pietsie Pizzicato by Willyne Hammerstein

FACEBOOK IS GETTING GREEDIER
Some of you may have noticed that I have not been posting as often on Facebook. When I post something, Facebook often only shows it to 50-150 of the 44,800+ quilters who have liked the page.

That means that even if you have liked the Inklingo Facebook Page you probably are not getting my photos in your timeline. Facebook wants me to pay every time I post something to show it to a few more quilters—never everyone—so it is up to you to visit.

REPLAYS ON THE BLOG
Watching live and interacting with comments is great fun but every video is also available to watch later. When I post the replays on the blog, I add links and extra info. There is a list under the Video tab on the website. Video Tab

NEW Inklingo Starlit Star Shape Collection

Live Inklingo Video 07 was long, so this clip (above) is just the few minutes where I introduced my new star design.

The shape collection is ready now!

Starlit Star 12 inch
It is available at a low intro price—but only for the first week.

This is big news for the quilters who requested a 2 inch 45° diamond.

Inklingo Starlit Star

It is called Starlit Star. Thank you for all the suggestions. It was not easy to choose from the names you sent when I announced this star design in a live video.

If you don’t have time to watch all of Live Inklingo Video 07 (over an hour!), the short clip at the top gives you a peek into the design process and explains how I draw the precision corners.

Inklingo Combo Layout

It also demonstrates this combo layout and pressing.

If this short clip makes you want to watch the rest, the Encore Presentation of the Seventh Live Inklingo Video is on the blog too.

Introduction to Inklingo

There is another short video about how Inklingo works.

I have not finished making updates to the website (Index of Shapes, Smart Shopper’s Idea Book, etc.) but I could not wait any longer to show you the new shapes.

Here is the link again: Starlit Star 12 inch

I am considering other sizes and I love seeing your comments, so let me know what you think, okay?

Thank you for visiting today.

Encore Presentation of the Seventh LIVE Inklingo Video

Live Inklingo Video with Linda Franz

Thank you to everyone who watched while the video was live! It was a struggle to get started but it all worked out in the end.

Please scroll down to the last image (with the play button) to watch the replay.

On Friday night the audio and video were not synced and the picture was choppy. We finally gave up after 3 tries—but I kept working on it overnight and all day Saturday.

If you haven’t guessed by now, Persistence is my middle name.

Sewing with Inklnigo Live

I finally found a way to broadcast again but it was exactly 24 hours later than I planned. Thank you to everyone, like Barb, who came back to sew with me.

HOW TO SEW STARS
This is my longest, most demo-rich live video so far. It is jam-packed with great info. There is something for everyone.

I demonstrated simple Inklingo techniques for printing on fabric and sewing stars by machine AND by hand—or with a combination of hand and machine stitching.

Silent Garden Quilt with Inklingo

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

  • How I finished the edges of my Silent Garden quilt (Millefiori Quilts 3)
  • A chance to name the new star (I haven’t made a final decision, so it’s not too late to suggest something.)
  • What to do when a shape is not inklingo-able (yet), like the partial diamond on the side edges of my Silent Garden.
  • How to use freezer paper with an acrylic ruler to make a template for ANY shape (I used freezer paper templates for the gold part-diamonds on the edge.)
  • Gorgeous examples of stars made by Inklingo quilters
  • Judy Martin’s fabulous new Singular Stars book

How to print on fabric with Inklingo

SOMETHING FOR NEWBIES
If you are new to Inklingo, I showed what you can do with the free Diamond Triangle Square shape collection. I have heard from a few long-time Inklingo quilters who say this was a good review for them too.

  • How to prepare fabric and freezer paper to print
  • How to use the Bookmarks panel to navigate in the free shape collection
  • Printing a custom page size with the ANY shape collection
  • Rotary cutting without templates or measuring
  • Hybrid piecing (combining hand and machine piecing in the same block)
  • Circling the intersection by hand for perfect points
  • Sewing sequence for LeMoyne Star (8-pointed star)
  • Pressing technique for LeMoyne Star

I will probably do more printing in every video because it always gets such a great reaction—and that reaction is usually “This is so much simpler than I imagined!”

Un-named Star from Inklingo

SOMETHING FOR EXPERIENCED INKLINGOISTS
Even if you have been using Inklingo for almost 12 years already, there was something for you:

  • Announcement of a new un-named star shape collection, and how it resulted from requests from quilters
  • Info about Inklingo’s precision numbers and sizes
  • Insight into how I design a shape collection
  • How to use precision corners to give you confidence

Wash tub and board

I also explained how Inklingo is a “disruptive technology.”

Did you know you can still buy washtubs and scrubbing boards on Amazon? That doesn’t mean it is the best way to wash fabric or quilts. I feel the same way about acrylic templates. You can still buy them in 2018. Wow. Who would have believed it.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN WE’RE GOING LIVE AGAIN?
Yahoo Groups and subscribers did not get emails this time. The message sent to Yahoo Groups was delayed several days for some unknown reason.

The most reliable way to know what is new is to subscribe to the blog by email. I spent several days last week getting issues fixed there, so emails are being delivered again. Some quilters had not heard from me for a long time but it is fixed now.

It is a good idea to check the Inklingo Facebook Page frequently. IMPORTANT  You cannot count on Facebook to show you anything from Inklingo anymore, even when you have liked the page. Facebook changed the rules in January. They pester me all day long with messages asking me for money to show my photos and videos to the people who have already liked the Inkingo page. I only break down and pay for ads occasionally, so if you don’t visit on your own, you will miss what I share there..

Introduction to Inklingo

Please share the Inklingo videos with your friends. This one, on the Main Beginner’s Page is only 8 minutes and it explains how Inklingo works.

I still have to add Live 07 to the  summary of the other LIVE videos on the website. (Click on the Video tab.)

EDITED VERSIONS OF LIVE 01 and LIVE 02
As I mentioned in Live 07, I am thrilled that I was able to edit Live 01 and Live 02 to remove my rookie mistakes (wrong camera view, overlapping audio). I think I can post those on YouTube. I’m still figuring out how to do that. Persistence.

I am learning with each new video. When I watch the replay, there are always things I think I could do better next time. It is a huge learning experience for me and I hope each video is Time Well Spent for you.

Click this image for the replay of Live Inklingo Video 07.

Please tell your friends about the video because they may not know about it yet.

If you missed it or if you need a review, you can watch Live 07 now, okay? Thank you for watching and thank you for visiting.

Inklingo Live Video 07 – Coming Soon

Inklingo Live Video # 7

I have prepared some good demos and will announce a new shape collection in the next live video. I hope you will tune in to watch on the Inklingo Facebook Page.

Please mark your calendars for Friday, March 9, 7 pm Eastern Time. I hope you will tell your friends too because they might not be getting Inklingo emails anymore. (Details below.)

There is no sound until you hover over the video and click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner. The video should to play immediately but if it doesn’t, please refresh the page.

Inklingo Live Video

What I’ve learned doing video live:

  • Live videos are a fun way to connect with quilters and show how to print.
  • Better cameras make a big difference.
  • Mistakes will happen (but I’m getting better).
    And . . .
  • Many quilters who subscribe to the blog were not getting my emails.

I have worked hard to fix the problems because live videos are such a great way to connect and to demonstrate Inklingo techniques for printing and sewing.

Silent Garden with Inklingo

I have sewn all of the seams in my Silent Garden now too. I won’t be able to resist showing it to you on Friday. It is sewn partly by machine and partly by hand.

Relaxing with a needle and thread helped me stay cool while I was working with the website programmer on email delivery.

EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS
The rules have changed recently.

  1. If you want to receive my emails, it is a good idea to add linda@lindafranz.com to your contact list.
  2. Google (gmail) and Microsoft (outlook) and Yahoo and other email services are watching for signals to help them decide whether or not to deliver emails to your Inbox.
  3. Positive signal: If you open the email and click to visit the blog.
  4. Negative signal: If you never open or click. Emails will start to be dumped in spam or promotions—or just go nowhere, even though you subscribed.
  5. If you need to take a break, all you have to do is click on the link in the email to unsubscribe and the emails stop immediately. I am happy to help too. linda@lindafranz.com
  6. Any time you want to subscribe again, just enter your email address in the box in the right sidebar. If you are on mobile, the right sidebar is usually moved below the article. If you got an email this time, you don’t have to do anything.

It is a privilege to be invited into  your Inbox and I take it seriously. I only write when there is something new to share.

New Inklingo Shape Collections

WHAT HAVE YOU MISSED?
There have been seven new Inklingo shape collections since November, all for designs in Millefiori Quilts 3.

I will announce another new shape collection in the Live Video.

Inklingo on The Quilt Show

Recently Diane Kirkhart did a demo of Inklingo on The Quilt Show.

If you missed my live videos, you can watch replays. There are summaries under the Video tab on the website, so you can choose a topic.

Lastly, a few things have moved on the blog. All of the content since 2009 is still searchable but the search box has moved and so has “Leave a Comment” which is now at the top. I love seeing your comments.

By the way, I checked World Time Buddy to find out when Friday, 7 – 8 pm Eastern Time is in  some of the places where quilters were watching last time:

  • Brisbane, Australia – Saturday 10 – 11 am
  • Perth, Australia – Saturday 8 – 9 am
  • Singapore – Saturday 8 – 9 am (same as Perth)
  • Jakarta , Indonesia – Saturday 7 – 8 am
  • Reykjavik, Iceland – Friday midnight – Saturday 1 am
  • Los Angeles, California – Friday 4 – 5 pm
  • Rotterdam, Netherlands – Saturday 1 – 2 am (very late!)

I’m glad you clicked and I hope you will tune in live. Thank you for visiting today.

Inklingo on The Quilt Show with Ricky Tims and Diane Kirkhart

Welcome to visitors from The Quilt Show!

Ricky Tims and Diane Kirkhart talk about Inklingo

SHOW 2205
Diane Kirkhart shows Ricky Tims how to use Inklingo to print, cut  and sew Passacaglia shapes to make the cover quilt on Millefiori Quilts by Willyne Hammerstein (first book).

Diane has made several glorious Passacaglia variations with various methods. Spectacular!

Diane is a fan of Inklingo and I was excited to see how she demonstrated it.

In the first 40 minutes, Diane demonstrates gluing templates for English Paper Piecing (EPP) and then gluing to zig zag by machine with Apliquick tools .

Monkey says they saved the best for last. (We’re partial.)

Inklingo on The Quilt Show

START PRINTING WITH THE FREE SHAPES
I am delighted that Diane mentioned that you can try printing on fabric with the free shape collection. Inklingo is designed to work with a computer and any ordinary Inkjet printer, so anyone can try it, as Diane says, “without spending a dime.”

Diane only had a few minutes to show the printed shapes, so if you are curious about how Inklingo works, there is an 8-minute video on the Main Beginner’s Page —and that is where to order the free shapes.

If you do order the free shapes, please let me know that you heard about Inklingo from Diane on The Quilt Show.

A free fabric sample will be sent to you to get you started! (USA and Canada only)

Silent Garden with Inklingo

FUSSY CUT WITH INKLINGO
I am delighted that Diane had a chance to mention that you can fussy cut with Inklingo.

Her method is different from the two methods I teach:

Inklingo on The Quilt Show

Not a member—yet? For one week in March, non-members will be able watch her episode too. Very nice.

I have been a member at The Quilt Show continuously since day one, January 1, 2007. I think that watching one TQS sample video might convince you to become a member too.

Inklingo on The Quilt Show

When Diane showed Ricky a piece of fabric printed and still attached to the freezer paper, he “got it.” He asked some great questions. He understood immediately that you do not need paper templates or acrylic templates or glue or special tools when you use Inklingo, so it is the most economical AND the fastest way to make a quilt.

Inklingo makes it easier for anyone to start quilting AND it makes it possible to make elaborate quilts like Passacaglia in a reasonable amount of time, at a reasonable price.

LOVE VIDEO?
If Diane’s wonderful introduction makes you want to know more about Millefiori Quilts, there is another short video on the Main Millefiori Quilts Page (under the Shop tab) showing how to sew Passacaglia by hand OR by machine with Inklingo—in only 6 minutes.

If you love learning from videos as much as I do, you might want to watch some of the replays of my Live Inklingo Videos too.
